Italy, Milan

Dentons has announced the hire of Ugo Bisacco as Chief Operating Officer in Italy. In this role, he will coordinate and optimize operations and projects of the Firm to achieve greater effectiveness and efficiency.

Ugo Bisacco has longstanding experience both as a professional services manager and business consulting practitioner. He joins from Value Partners, where, as Global CFO, he had direct responsibility for foreign subsidiaries in the UK, UAE, Singapore, Hong Kong, and other markets. He led the start-up of ABC Group, a consultancy company and professional network founded by Luigi Guatri, and served as CEO of some companies within the group. He also worked as a senior manager in Andersen’s Business Consulting practice, and before that, he worked on special projects for the Executive Board of Fidis, a former finance subsidiary of Fiat. Bisacco holds an Economics degree from the University of Turin.

Heath Tarbert, a U.S. partner at international legal practice Allen & Overy, was confirmed yesterday evening by the United States Senate by a margin of over 90% (87-8) as the next Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, International Markets and Development. He is expected to be officially sworn into office on or before Tuesday, October 10.

In this role, Mr. Tarbert’s responsibilities will include running the unit within the Treasury Department in charge of evaluating foreign investments in the U.S. for national security issues as part of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS); representing  the U.S. at the Financial Stability Board and G20 working groups on regulatory policies and coordination; developing positions at the World Bank and other MDBs in development policy areas; developing policy in sovereign debt workouts; trade negotiations involving financial services;  and providing technical assistance to over 40 countries with respect to debt, tax, budget, banking and anti-money laundering.

Australia, Sydney

Global law firm White & Case LLP has expanded its International Arbitration Practice in Asia-Pacific with the addition of Max Bonnell as a new partner in Sydney.

His experience also includes more than a dozen arbitrations arising from disputes in India, and he is a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration.

Sweden, Stockholm

Global law firm White & Case LLP has strengthened its Nordic private equity and corporate capabilities with the additions of Jan Jensen and Shoan Panahi as partners in the Firm’s Stockholm office. Both Jensen and Panahi join White & Case’s Global Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) Practice, with Jensen heading the Firm’s private equity practice for the Nordic region.

The New York office of global law firm K&L Gates LLP has added Toshi Yoshida as a partner in the energy, infrastructure and resources practice area. He joins K&L Gates from Mayer Brown.

Yoshida focuses his practice on global energy projects, including LNG, oil and gas, power, and chemical and water projects, and cross-border mergers and acquisitions in general manufacturing sectors. In particular, he has extensive experience representing Japanese clients for their global energy projects and business operations in the U.S., and works with clients on matters in Asia, Australia, Latin America, Africa, and the U.S., among other regions.

Spain, Madrid

International law firm Bird & Bird LLP appoints leading Spanish competition & EU specialist Patricia Liñán as a partner who will join the firm in the coming weeks. Patricia will primarily be based in our Madrid office and will divide her time between the firm’s offices in Madrid and Brussels.

Patricia joins from CMS Albiñana & Suárez De Lezo where she was Partner and Head of the EU and Competition Law Department.

Patricia advises companies in proceedings before the Spanish Competition Authority and the European Commission in both antitrust and merger control proceedings. Her most recent work focuses around antitrust damages claims in Spain as well as compliance matters.

Patricia’s recruitment will reinforce our Spanish Competition & EU Law practice by joining forces with partner José Rivas and further expand the firm’s growing global Competition team.
