Dentons has achieved CarbonNeutral certification for setting and meeting a target of zero net emissions across all of its offices in the UK and Middle East. The certification is valid until 2020 and is granted by Natural Capital Partners, the world-leading provider of innovative solutions for positive impact on the world’s natural capital.

CarbonNeutral certification is granted to businesses or organisations which have reduced their carbon emissions to net zero in accordance with The CarbonNeutral Protocol. The Protocol is the global standard for carbon neutral programmes, providing pragmatic guidance for businesses to build credible reduction solutions and report zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Dentons has achieved carbon neutrality by making internal emissions reductions and through supporting a water infrastructure project in Uganda. This project delivers verified emissions reductions alongside community benefits, including providing access to clean drinking water in small rural communities. With access to clean water, households use less firewood to purify water through boiling and the incidence of disease and resulting fatalities is reduced. In addition, the boreholes repaired and created through the project assist with infrastructure development and help make communities less susceptible to drought by reducing reliance on surface water. The Gold Standard project is also being rolled out across Malawi, Rwanda and Eritrea and is estimated to impact more than 5,700 people across sub-Saharan Africa.

Jeremy Cohen, Dentons CEO for the UK and Middle East, said, “We are extremely proud to have been able to reduce our own carbon emissions significantly and to be involved in supporting an important water infrastructure project in Africa. Combatting climate change and supporting global sustainability are important causes for Dentons as a business. We have worked hard to achieve our CarbonNeutral certification, which makes a clear and credible statement about the action that we are taking.”
